2010 was a busy year, 12 months that were anything but short on news.

It is clear that 2010's events have set the stage for great industry change in 2011. BankInfoSecurity.com has compiled a list of the year's most noteworthy trends and events for 2010, all viewable in this 10 of 2010 slide show.

Regulatory reform, including the establishment of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau under Dodd-Frank, pushed banks and credit unions to brace themselves for stronger regulatory oversight. ACH fraud and corporate account takeovers fueled a retail backlash, leading to a spree of subsequent lawsuits between financial institutions and their commercial customers.

The year also saw a number of changes and trends that will have lasting effects on the prosecution of cyberhackers. Significant headway was made in the global cyberwar, most notably through the sentencing of Albert Gonzalez, the mastermind behind the highly publicized TJX and Heartland Payments Systems breaches.

2010 was a year of innovation, seeing the emergence of mobile payments and more financial activity from social networks. And serious discussions about a move to EMV in the United States finally began to take shape, as did a push for more authentication and security in the realm of online banking and e-commerce.
