CyberEdBoard Profiles in Leadership: Surinder Lall

Paramount's Security Leader on Embracing Collaboration and Innovation in the AI Age
Surinder Lall, senior vice president, global information security risk management, Paramount, and CyberEdBoard member

Surinder Lall's 25-year career in technology and cybersecurity began on a help desk, but his leadership path accelerated after responding to one of the earliest DDoS attacks on an online gambling platform. This led him to develop expertise in cybersecurity at a time when few understood its significance.

Today Lall, senior vice president of global information security risk management at Paramount, must balance rapid business innovation with security. The explosion of digital footprints and the integration of AI in everyday business applications create vulnerabilities that must be addressed collaboratively, he said.

"It's a fine balance of treading the needs of the business as well as securing the business, and often they don't go naturally hand in hand," Lall said. "Business is keen on expanding its revenue streams, and the security professionals want to minimize risk. There is a tightrope to walk there that takes some skill."

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at Cybersecurity Summit: London, conducted as part of the CyberEdBoard's ongoing Profiles in Leadership series, Lall also discussed:

  • Cybersecurity challenges related to the interconnectedness of technology;
  • Implications of the rapid growth of startups in the AI sector;
  • Why cybersecurity professionals should focus on continuous learning and skill development.

As part of Paramount's information security leadership, Lall safeguards its assets. He has worked in companies such as Viacom and Elsevier Science, and he founded The Neurodiversity Network and AI Ethics and Policy Think Tank. He is a board member of U.K. Government Cyber Security Advisory and a CyberEdBoard member.
