Tips for a Spam-Free InBox

Feel like you're canned in by the spam emails in your inbox? Don't despair, here are some common sense tips to help stop spam from getting to your email inbox.

Did you know that registering an email address with a single website can result in hundreds of junk emails a week? This shows how easy it can be to become the target of unsolicited mail.

Many spam filters now catch the majority of junk mail that's headed your way -- follow these tips to reduce even further the chance of having your inbox brimming with spam.

  • Use a different e-mail address to sign up for newsletters, online postings and trade shows (Yahoo, Gmail are two that offer free mail addresses). If the inbox begins to bulge with spam emails, you can delete the address.
  • Resist the urge to publish your email address on any website or online forum
  • If you didn't originally sign up to receive an email, or if you don't recognize the sender, do not unsubscribe from the list. By unsubscribing, you show the spammer that your e-mail address is active!
  • If you use web-based email services, report spam to the service provider. This helps the Internet Service Provider better determine what messages are spam.
  • Be sure to use anti-spam software, this will help block a majority of spam.
  • Block spam by creating filters within your email service provider to stop unwanted email by listing the email you want to stop receiving and determine which e-mail addresses or phrases in the messages don't change.
  • Do not reply to spam, this is what the spammers need, a live email address.
  • Don't buy anything from spammers, or click on links inside the emails as some nasty things can be hiding on those websites!
